Abstract:
As a popular form of entertainment, movies have become a significant part of people's daily lives. However, for non-native speakers, understanding the dialogue in movies can be challenging, and this is where subtitles come in. This paper focuses on the multimodal discourse analysis of the translation of movie subtitles, using the example of the movie "Alita: Battle Angel". In particular, this paper analyzes the translation of subtitles from the perspective of visual, audio, and textual modalities.
The first part of the paper introduces the theoretical framework of multimodal discourse analysis and provides an overview of the movie "Alita: Battle Angel". The second part of the paper analyzes the translation of subtitles in the movie from the perspective of visual, audio, and textual modalities. The visual analysis focuses on the use of color, font, and positioning of subtitles. The audio analysis examines the use of sound effects and music in the movie, and how they are translated in the subtitles. The textual analysis looks at the translation of dialogue and how it is affected by cultural differences.
Overall, this paper demonstrates the importance of considering multiple modalities in the translation of movie subtitles. By analyzing the translation of subtitles in "Alita: Battle Angel", this paper provides insights into how different modalities can affect the translation process and the final product.
